My First Skillshare Class: The Process, Set Up & my Thoughts!

In January 2021 I decided to upload my first ever Skillshare class and this was my first actual class teaching my skills to other creatives!

I wanted to join Skillshare as a teacher since the beginning! I was on there as a student which is what actually helped kick start my journey as an artist! I even found some notes I’d written the other day when I was trying to plan my first class (in 2019) but I couldn't wrap my head around it and I didn't feel confident enough so I pushed the idea aside!

You might be wondering what Skillshare actually is?

It's an online platform for all creatives which you can join on a monthly or yearly membership and then learn from hundreds of classes from different creatives!

I have a referral link if you would like 1 whole month for Free. Just click here for the FREE month and you’ll get access to the premium membership!

The classes are broken down into bite size lessons which I love as it makes it easier and more fun to follow along! They have classes for Video Editing, Illustration, Graphic Design, Productivity and so much more!

How I made my video...

I thought it would be interesting to share a quick overview on how I made my class and how I brought it all together.

It took me a lot longer than I expected, about a week in total! When I thought it would only take like 2 days! :-D

I didn’t have any fancy equipment so I used a box and some bean bags to hold my small tripod so I could achieve the over head view!

I used my Canon G7X camera which I've used for all of my YouTube video's (I've had that camera for years now!) and the tripod is called a Gorilla tripod! You can click on the items written as I’ve linked them to the product, if you wanna check any out!

Also I'm using the iPad Pro, 12.9inch with the Apple pencil (2nd gen)

I did struggle with background noise as I lived in a small apartment. I only had one set of windows for light and we were right next to a main road so you can always hear trucks and bikes going past. Plus if the above apartment start walking around you can hear their footsteps too! I didn’t let all of that distract me from getting the class done though, just had to work with what I had at the time!😂

I did receive my first positive review from a lovely student which made my day! By watching my classes, sharing them and leaving a review, it can actually help me establish credibility on the platform and will help to kick start my growth as a teacher, so for that, I am extremely grateful!

To edit everything, I put more work on myself than I needed to really! I edited using Adobe Premier Pro and would do some every day after I did filming but after everything was edited, I went back to edit each video again. I forgot I had to add the beginning title and music to each video and I also re-edited any little bits I had missed! Because I didn’t have a flow with the process I was much slower at doing it all.

After uploading all the classes to Skillshare, I saw I had left lots of me saying 'errr' in the video's which Skillshare actually reccommend to cut out…so I decided to EDIT IT ALL AGAIN which meant two lots of uploading to Skillshare as well! 🙈 Things only get better with practice I guess! 😂

To bring it all together I needed to write out my profile page on Skillshare, the description of the video, adding the free downloads you get with the class and then going over every video to make sure it was all good to go! Re-reading everything I wrote, checking links & attachments and watching the video’s through one last time before I hit publish.

Once I had posted it publicly, it was in the first 10 minutes I had the email to say it was approved and now live! I felt so accomplished and excited but also a little nervous!🙊 I know the class could be better but I'm glad I finally did it all. I pushed through all my doubts and fears and made one of my biggest art goals a reality! 😃

I really enjoyed the process and I love being able to help others grow in their art business! Some classes on Skillshare helped me kickstart my journey in the beginning and if I can help beginner creatives by watching my classes, then that would be amazing!!!

Here is a PREVIEW to my class...
